Argentina, Bolivia

Rubèn Gracia completed the Dakar 2016 rally… with BFGoodrich®,.

350 contestants, 13 stages, 9,500 km of sand, dirt and mud in a South American inferno.

From Buenos Aires to Rosario via the salt desert of Uyuni, this 38th edition of the Dakar rally, the most famous of all Raid Rallies, was also one of the toughest with 125 contestants dropping out of the race.

Rubèn Gracia, two-time champion of Spain’s All-Terrain Rally, has been a passionate follower of the Dakar for longer than he can remember and had always dreamed of taking part. In 2016, it was a dream come true thanks to BFGoodrich®.

Preparation was a long and physical ordeal but once in Argentina, Rùben Gracia was able to measure the buzz and excitement the race produces.

Torrential rainfall the first few days. High altitudes and bitter cold on the roads through Bolivia. Dusty roads and intense heat over the final section. Rùben Gracia and co-pilot Diego Vallejo achieved the exploit of actually crossing the finishing line at their very first attempt.

They finished in 41st position in the overall rankings at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Montero ARC T3, fitted with BFGoodrich® All Terrain TA KO2 and Mud Terrain tires.  These tires showed no signs of failings and stood up to every demand thanks to the highest standards of performance, durability and versatility.

You can be sure that for the next outing of the Dakar rally, Rùben Gracia will once again let his passions get the better of him and be back on the starting line with BFGoodrich® tires.

“As a child I dreamed of participating in the Dakar Rally someday. And this year 2016 I was finally able to get it. People had told me many stories about the Dakar, but there's nothing like experiencing it personally.

Preparations were long and hard. It was our first time and nothing could fail. Therefore we should be aware of many details.

Once in Argentina, we could experience how important this race is in South America. The spectators follow the race in a massive way, and the itinerary populations are paralyzed to see it and also be part of the show.

Torrential rain in the early stages, cold and high altitude on our way to Bolivia, dust and extreme heat in our return to Argentina, were part of the complication of a journey of over 10,000 km.

We are very satisfied sportingly with our career aboard the Mitsubishi Montero T3. We soon adapted the right pace and placed ourselves in the fight for the T-3 category. We were leading the category until a breakdown on stage 12 which slowed us down to second place. Finishing our first participation in 41st overall and 2nd in the category T3 is a result that makes us very happy.

And we achieved this result largely through the extraordinary performance of our BFGoodrich tires. The Mud Terrain behaved ideally in the mud of the early stages, and on the sand of the second week proved extraordinary, rolling sometimes below 0.5 Kg / cm2 pressure. More than 10,000 km without puncturing is an important fact.

We will be back to participate in 2017. And we will do so with the best tires, BFGoodrich.”

Rubén Gracia

Rally and Raid Driver

Rubén Gracia and BF Goodrich achieved their objective for this 2016 edition. This year’s Dakar was one of the toughest in the Rally’s long history. Over a distance of nearly 10,000 kilometers, of which 4,500 were timed, the Dakar 2016 completed its mission with the most challenging selection criteria.

Actually completing the Dakar is a real challenge in itself, this being one of the most demanding adventures on earth. Spanish champion Ruben Gracia achieved the objective he had set himself by finishing the race in one piece.

Not only in one piece but in 41st position overall and 2nd in the T3 category aboard his Mitsubishi Montero ARC, fitted with a range of BFGoodrich tires, quality assurance at its highest.

Covering the Dakar course and reaching the final podium of a rally such as the Dakar is a fantastic achievement for contestants and those who manage to do so will never forget it for as long as they live. But few people every make it.

Out of a total of 110 contestants in the car category leaving from the capital, Buenos Aires, only 44 completed the course this year. For the others, unfortunately, for one reason or another, their hopes were shattered. Along a complex route lined with an incredible variety of trails and surfaces, each sports tire has a very special role to play when crossing different difficult terrains. Tires can and do prove to be a critical factor for a car’s performance and for the final result.

The BF Goodrich tires used by the Spanish champion were certainly up to it and showed no signs of failings, taking all surfaces in their stride, whether sand, mud or rocks, as explained by the driver himself. Rubén Gracia: “We are very happy with our results over there. There is a wide variety of surfaces that you might encounter over a timed sector. As a result you need a tire that adapts to all surfaces, a tire that gives a balanced compromise between performance, durability and versatility. This commitment was met by our partner BFGoodrich".

More than 10,000 km without puncturing is an important fact.

We will be back to participate in 2017. And we will do so with the best tires, BFGoodrich
